Single and Raising Champions: Faith, Strength, and the Village It Takes

I’ve walked the path of a single mom for a while now. Full custody, all the decisions, caregiver of retired missionary pastors, and a fierce love to serve my Redeemer that burns brighter than any challenge. But every Father’s Day has been focused on my dad — Abuelito Barrón. While praying, God shifted my thoughts. My heart turned towards another kind of single warrior — the single dads.

Do they wrestle with the same worries that knot my stomach at 3 am?

I want to believe that the answer is yes. Single dads face a unique set of hurdles. Proverbs 22:6 tells us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” This verse applies to moms and dads, highlighting the immense responsibility of raising a child. Single fathers often navigate societal pressures that downplay their role in nurturing.

Then there’s the emotional rollercoaster. Single parents, regardless of gender, battle loneliness, exhaustion, and the constant yearning to just be “enough.”

But Deuteronomy 31:8 reminds us, “The LORD is the One who goes ahead of you; He will be with you, He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” God is our rock, our steady hand in the storm.

Finding support is crucial. Single moms have built incredible communities, but what about the dads? Maybe it’s time to open our circles wider, break down stereotypes, and make a village that uplifts all single parents. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.” We are called to support one another, to be a listening ear and a helping hand.

So, to the single dads out there, know this:

  • You are strong. Joshua 1:9 (NIV) declares, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” God’s strength is in you.
  • You are not alone. Reach out, build your village, and know others understand your journey.
  • You are raising heroes. Every bedtime story, every scraped knee soothed, shapes your child into a champion.

We are in this together, single parents – moms and dads. Let’s walk this path, hand in hand, with faith as our guide and love as our compass. Because in the end, it’s not about who’s missing but about the incredible love present.
